Web Page Search - RSS Feeds
By CoolMamie

In this article I will be speaking to you about things that you can do with RSS feeds in order to assist your website to be seen by the search engines. You probably already know what the RSS Feed is for, and if you have set up a Wordpress site, you will already have configured its settings the RSS feed, but just in case you aren't familiar with what it is for, it is simply a means of allowing people to get notification of updates that happen on your website by showing them a short summary of your most recent activity. People can then 'subscribe' to your site's RSS feed by clicking on it, and then making a selection from the available choices and clicking on the 'Subscribe Now' button.
The RSS feed button is very often to be found in the web browser's title box, along with the website name . This is where you will find it if you are using WordPress for your site. The button is usually an orange square with two curving white lines and a dot in the corner.
In the event that your site has been produced on a website building sites, your RSS feed will only be available on your blog page, and it will be either in the sidebar or down at the bottom of the page.
If you click on this button, it will bring up a box which shows your 'feed' URL - make a copy of this complete URL as you will be needing it a little bit further down the track.
Burning Your RSS Feed:
A little bit of background first on feedburners, which are a means of increasing the functionality of your RSS feed so that you can -
o View statistics for your site as it is being read
o Format your feed for any readers and all directories
o Customize your feed by adding things such as ads to them
o Display your Feedburner stats and also your subscription count with a widget

The other, and very important, thing a Feed Burner does is that it SERVES your RSS feedThis means that it doesn't matter how many people, or applications, are subscribed to and reading your feed, your own server isn't slowed down by it all.
As Google now own FeedBurner, it is fairly likely that they will be watching the feeds that are going through it. The more ways you can get attention from Google, the better.
o Head over to the FeedBurner site, www.feedburner.com and type your site feed into the box in the 'Start FeedBurning Now' area.
o Create a Username and Password
o Make a copy of your Feedburner feed address and check out the options on Page 2; if you don't wish to choose any of these, choose 'Skip directly to feed management'

When you come to the next page, click on the link appropriate for your site, e.g. 'Self-hosted Wordpress'. If there isn't a link that is appropriate for your site, simply sign out. If you click on the link for a WordPress site, you will be taken to a different page which will have a link for a Zip file. This file containes the FeedBurner plug-in files you need to upload to your Wordpress site. Google provide full instructions on how to do this, all on the same page, so make sure you print it off to make it easier for you as you work.
You can also use your Feedburner RSS feed to build backlinks automatically by submitting it to several RSS Directories/Aggregators. This way, every time you make a new post on your blog, you gain more and more backlinks to your blog. An RSS Directory/Aggregator is simply a site that delivers the content of your blog, or site via its 'feed'. This includes your active links.
